My wife and I usually choose large bottles or a box wine for the weekdays, this week we chose the Black Box Merlot. The Merlot is not 100% Merlot but is actually 81% Merlot, 14% Syrah, and 4% Petit Syrah. The grapes are taken from vineyards in Monterey County and Paso Robles, California. Talking about Monterey County, there is a great Pinot Noir from there called Irony, check it out.
The wine has a nice dark ruby red color and aromas of cinnamon, currants, leather, and oak. It tastes of raspberries up front but has some strawberry and red currant towards the end. Along with berry flavors it has notes of dark cherry, vanilla, and oak. It has a long finish and is very soft in tannins.
I gave this wine an 89, and it is a great every day wine. I have been enjoying this wine with roasted root vegetables, chicken, tofu, and will pair it with an eye of round roast tomorrow. See this link for the roasted root vegetables, Roasted Root Veggies with Couscous. Enjoy!
