Week in Review (Volume 3, Issue 3)

I can't really think of an introduction this week. I am drinking a solid stout right now, and instead of saying something stupid, I am just going to begin with my Week in Review.

Wednesday, January 14th, 2021: Joya de Nicaragua Cabinetta Serie No. 13 Lancero

Friday, January 16th, 2021: Regius of London Claro Especial Exclusivo USA Lancero Extra

Cigars Smoked This Week:

I started this week off with a Lancero Extra in the Claro Especial line of the Exclusivo USA brand from Regius of London. The Claro Especial line is my favorite line from the Exclusivo USA brand, and it is a line that shows nice complexity and a unique flavor profile. It is around medium in body and strength, and it is a cigar that is approachable by many smokers. With that being said, it has a complex flavor profile so it may not entirely be a smoke that a lot of smokers can truly enjoy. Overall, the Lancero Extra is a nice offering, but with this line I would go with a larger ring gauge.

When I first smoked this years back in 2019, I thought this particular Habano was terrible. I felt that the Habano was not a great regional edition, and I felt that it showed that the program produces a lot of duds and nothing really special. I was never a fan of the El Rey del Mundo brand before that, and after smoking this release I almost gave up on it entirely. Well, I came back to it this week and all I can tell you is that it has gotten a lot better with some age and I would buy a lot of them know. It is light and elegant, and a terrific Habano at that. If you happen to come across these, which is not impossible, I would pick up some up for now and later.

I lit up another Byron this week, and all I can tell you is that this is an incredible brand. Selected Tobacco is making some incredible stuff, and while the price is higher, you can not deny that there is some incredible tobacco being used and that the blends are phenomenal. The Byron is definitely the stronger of the three, and I would say that it is the spiciest as well. I would highly recommend that you all get a sampler of the three brands. Yes, they are pricey, but they are worth trying out and you will definitely find a favorite and then be able to focus on that particular smoke.

Call me crazy, but I prefer the Undercrown over the Liga Privada No. 9 line all the time. I think it is much more balanced and flavorful overall, and it still shows awesome traits that you can get with the No. 9. Now, the Corona Viva is definitely the better of all the vitolas, it has a different blend, but you can't go wrong with the Gran Toro either. It shows excellent construction throughout and produces a plethora of smoke as well. What I love about this cigar is that from beginning to end it is showing some cafe mocha, cream, and wood notes, and they are absolutely fantastic. I know you all have smoked them, but come back to them.

When I say that the ULTRA line is my least favorite of all the lines that Dion makes, I am being honest. With that being said, it is still an amazing line and ten times better than a lot of other stuff that guys are putting out there. Yes, it is very strong, but it still showing some amazing flavors that are awesome and nice additions to the strength level. I pick up some raisin notes here and there, and it pairs well with those tobacco, spice, leather, and oak notes. There are some currant flavors with that and it is a full bodied, full strength and full flavored cigar.

I smoked the last of my Bull & Bear this week and all I can say is wow! This is an awesome smoke and probably the favorite of my lines. It has got tremendous flavors and while the sizes are not my cup of tea, they do the line justice and work well with the flavors being delivered. I am reviewing it this week, so I will not spoil anymore, but if you have them at your shop, buy them!

I love the salomones vitola, I think it is simply fantastic and when blended correctly it can produce some tremendous flavors. You have the opportunity to pick out wrapper and filler blend qualities, and at points you can see the two working together to really producing an amazing flavor profile! I recently reviewed the CroMagnon Venus, which was a great example of the Connecticut Broadleaf line, but I was recently sent some Aquitaine Venus offerings, and they are just as great. Showing those strong qualities of the Aquitaine line, it has strength and flavors from beginning to end.

A new era has arrived with the cigars coming out of the Dominican Republic. We have seen the arrival of some new brand owners and a return of older ones, and the result has been some fantastic releases. I cam back to the Señorial Belicoso No. 2 this week and I am still saying wow! I have smoked through a box of these in a very short period of time, and I will be looking for some more shortly. The Belicoso No. 2 is my favorite vitola, and it is a vitola that shows great spice levels, cinnamon and pepper, and it also has some notes of mushrooms, earth, and coffee. The construction is great and it always delivers.

If you ever looking for a small Habanos that delivers flavors, price friendly, and is great now and with age, look no further than the San Cristóbal de la Habana El Príncipe. The Habano shows great construction with amazing flavors, and it is a smoke that I have been loving since I first smoked them. They are great in the afternoon or evening, and they are a smoke that is approachable by many smokers. if you are looking for an affordable Habano that is simply awesome, this is your smoke.
